Trail Etiquette
You’re ready to hit the trail and you are so excited for some fresh air, sounds of the wild, and hopefully that cool breeze! But, always remember, no matter where you’re at, be respectful of others and show trail etiquette. Let’s get started.
1. Be Friendly
A friendly hello, wave, or smile is all it takes to show others that you are friendly and approachable. “Outdoorsy” people are generally known for being friendly and helpful, and we don’t want to put a damper on that. You don’t have to find out the names of all their pets or where they went to highschool, but greeting them as you pass is almost always welcomed and appreciated.
2. Pass on the right
If the trail has traffic going both ways, you always pass on the right. Keep in mind, bicyclists may pass you on the left, but they should make it clear beforehand either by a bell, or communicating loudly that they are approaching.
3. Yield to hikers climbing up
Hikers going uphill always have the right-away over hikers going down. Sometimes the hikers going uphill prefer to step aside for a quick breather, but that should be their decision. If you are hiking downhill, yield to their preference.
4. Carry In, Carry Out
This should be common sense, but whatever you take in or on the trail needs to come out with you! Don’t leave litter, dog poo, or banana peels. Take it in, take it out.
5. Don’t Wander off Trail
Trails are there for a reason. For one, to keep you on track so you can find your way back. But secondly, to protect the nature around the trail. When hikers veer off track, they can cause erosion or damage to drainage systems. So best advice is to keep to the trail, and teach your children these valuable lessons as well.
6. Keep Music to yourself
Being out in nature is the perfect time to be quiet and well, listen to nature. My personal advice is to keep the earbuds and devices at home, but if you absolutely need music, keep it to a minimum.
There you have it, the trail etiquette you need to know for when you are out enjoying the trails!
Get out, Go adventure!
