Best Snacks for your Adventures

Hiking, biking, trail running, climbing, or whatever your adventure, you always need fuel to keep you going. Having snacks that are nutritious, delicious, energy giving, and easy to grab-and-go aren’t always easy to find. Make sure you are stocked up on these foods so when it’s time to adventure, you are ready! Here are some of the best snacks for your adventures.

1. Nuts

Nuts are nutritious, high in unsaturated fats, and easy to grab and go. They can be eaten plain, mixed together with other nuts, or thrown in a trail mix with dried fruit and chocolate. Often sold in individual packets, nuts are some of the best snacks to have on your adventure.

2. Fruit

An apple a day keeps the Doctor away! Fruit is good in almost any situation, including the trail or crag. Depending on the duration of your adventure, you’ll want to stick to fruits that are hearty, i.e. not needing refrigeration or too much prep. Apples, bananas, and clementines are some of the best fruits that are easy to grab and go. Other fruits like avocados, blueberries, and kiwi are also delicious on the trail, as long as you have a cooler bag (and a knife and spoon), or don’t wait too long to eat them.

3. Vegetables

Vegetables aren’t always the easiest snack to have on the go, but some veggies can be quickly prepared for an adventure. Especially if you are adventuring with little humans, having healthy options for them to snack on is always preferred. Carrots, yummy peppers, celery sticks, and sugar peas are easy to wash and cut for a refreshing snack.

4. Gummies

Fruit gummies or gatorade chews are nice to have on the trail because of their small, compact size, and yet they still bring a good source of energy. If you’re feeding fruit gummies to your children, just watch the ingredients and sugar content. I like to stick to organic kinds like Annies Fruit Snacks.

5. Chocolate

Chocolate has caffeine, giving you a little boost of energy when you need it. A good way to incorporate chocolate is in trail mix or granola bars. Dark chocolate bars or squares are certainly delicious, but depending on the weather, they aren’t the best travellers 🙁 If the weather is cold, dark chocolate squares from Endangered Species are awesome for your hike.

6. Cliff Bars (protein bars)

Cliff bars, organic protein bars, granola bars, homemade snack bars, or any other type of bars are good for adventures as long as they’re made with the good stuff (watch for high fructose corn syrup and other ingredients you don’t know). If the ingredients are words you know and understand, it’s probably a safe bet that it’s a good bar.

7. Gatorade or electrolytes

Don’t miss hydrating while on your adventure! Gatorade or other drinks packed with electrolytes are good for restoring minerals to your body, and help you finish your adventure feeling less depleted. Electrolyte pouches are awesome because you can add them to water anywhere.

8. Hard boiled eggs

Hard boiled eggs take a little bit of prep and prethought, but I love having them out on the crag or trail. Eggs are something I always have in my fridge. They just take a few minutes to boil, and then you have nutrient rich eggs to take along with you wherever your adventure leads. *Weather depending, you may want to stick these in a cooler bag. I often take them out without one, and eat them by lunch time, but if the weather is pretty hot, I wouldn’t risk it.

9. Peanut Butter

Individual peanut butter packets are the perfect little things to slip in a baby carrier  or backpack for some quick protein when needed. Of course it goes with fruit and chocolate too, so feel free to make it fancy or eat it plain.

10. Tuna Pouches

Tuna pouches are a great, easy snack that I love bringing out on the trail. The tuna fish is full of healthy fats, protein, and lots of other nutrients, making it a nutritious snack to have when exploring and adventuring. Of course, individual packs make it super easy to grab and go.

KID-friendly Snacks

And for all of you Mama’s, when you are adventuring with your kiddos, you also want good snacks for them too. Besides all the foods mentioned above, here are some snacks that are especially fun for the kiddos.

1. Goldfish

Goldfish are made with real cheese and are baked, not fried. While they still have some ingredients I’m not fond of, they are not a bad option for snacks on the go.

2. Yogurt pouches

Yogurt pouches are awesome for the kiddos, especially when the weather’s on the warm side. Downside to this – you will need a cooler bag of some sort.

3. Cheese cubes

Again, cheese cubes will most likely need refrigeration, but cheese has protein, calcium, and other goodies in there that are great for kids. Cut them up (or buy them pre-cut!) and pair with fruit or pretzels.

4. Honey Wheat Pretzels

My whole crew is fond of these Honey Wheat Pretzels. Made with whole wheat, and lightly sweetened with honey, these pretzel sticks are a favorite for all! Snack on the go, or pair with cheese, fruit, or yogurt.

Add some of these items to your grocery list and you’ll have the best snacks for your adventure at any time!

Get out, Go adventure!
