6 Reasons To Adventure With Your Kids

Adventuring together with my children sounds dreamy and all, but it’s so much work! Sound familiar? You may be thinking, “Why should I adventure together with my kids? Wouldn’t it be so much easier to wait until we’re empty nesters?” And the answer to the latter question is, probably yes. But all the family adventures that happen with young kids aren’t because they’re easier. It’s because they offer benefits with so much greater value. Adventuring together with your children gives them opportunity to explore, creates lasting memories for a lifetime, provides exercise for all, and more. Here are 6 reasons to adventure with your kids.

1. Gets Them Exploring

Taking your kids out on an adventure let’s them explore their surroundings beyond the confinements of their home. And this goes for anywhere. Be it the library, a pond, the neighbors farm, or a 3 mile hike. When young children are in new surroundings, there is so much to take in, learn and appreciate. Not only are they observing sights, but also sounds, smells, textures, and atmospheres.

If you take them to a library, they’ll soon learn that it’s a quiet place with hushed voices and the smell of books. If you take them to a farm, they’ll enjoy the feels of corn or animal feed, and will be well aware of the smells of a barn. As they explore they will start to learn what they like, dislike, and love.

2. Builds Family Connectedness

Going out on adventures together gives the whole family (or Mom and kids) the chance to learn to work together, experience together, and have fun together. Adventures bring different opportunities and obstacles to face – sometimes the weather may turn inclement, maybe the library canceled their program, or your friends couldn’t make it last minute. As you learn to deal with these disappointments, and shift gears when necessary, you will learn how to connect and get through trials as a family together.

3. Exercise For All

Certain adventures will definitely be more of a workout than others, such as hiking, biking, or kayaking, but all adventures get you out and get you moving. Strolling around an orchard, playing catch at the park, or walking around the zoo. And let’s be honest, if you have toddlers, life is almost always a workout 😉 But adventures let you get out and put some extra steps in, both for yourself and your kids, that you wouldn’t get at home.

4. Creates Lasting Memories

Adventures create memories. Your kids will never forget the time you spent with them and the treasured memories that were created. They may not remember every single activity, or place visited, but they will remember how it made them feel. Adventures make kids feel brave, free, and empowered.

When you put the effort and time into making adventures happen, they feel loved, seen, and valued. The adventures you go on now with your kids will be a foundation that you will continue to build on for the future. You’ll remember the crazy nights, the tired mornings, packing all the bags, and cleaning out the car. Your kids will remember the excitement, the thrill, the joy, the laughter, and the expedition. How are you going to create lasting memories with your family adventures in 2022

5. Builds Family Teamwork

Working well together as a family is a beautiful thing, but it doesn’t happen overnight. Adventures provide opportunities to learn to work together no matter what the situation. If you’re hiking, and one of the young ones just can’t go any more, the older kids learn to pitch in. Or when you’re packing the car or setting up camp, teach your children how they can help make the process smoother.

Give them little jobs that they can help with. It empowers them and makes them feel like they are helping, while also getting things, even though small, checked off your list.

6. Learning Through New Experiences

Adventures = Learning. No matter what the adventure, nuggets of wisdom can always be pulled from the experience. We should never stop learning. As kids, as adults, as grandparents, humans should constantly be learning and expanding their knowledge. So you go out to the same Nature Preserve and walk around. What did you learn? Think about it, contemplate, and teach your kids to do the same.

Sometimes it’s the simplest adventures that prompt us to reflect and really think about what that experience did for us. Encourage your kids to do the same. Perhaps it’s a similar outing to one they had before, but ask them what they liked and didn’t like. Ask them how certain things made them feel. Learn to process thoughts and emotions about the adventures, as well as learning from the adventure.

Conclusion:

Getting out and adventuring with your kids brings a lot of benefits to your family. The six reasons why you should adventure with your kids are as follows. Your kids have new opportunities to explore, the whole family feels more connected, everyone gets some exercise, lasting memories are made, teamwork is established, and learning happens through the new experiences.

Adventuring together is not always the easiest, but it is so rewarding and worth it. Your kids will thank you, and you will be grateful when you look back down memory lane.

Get out, Go adventure.

  1. I totally agree with what you said that children’s memories serve as the foundation for their future. My son is turning eight this month, and I want to take him to a place where he can experience nature and see different living creatures. That being said, I’ll take him to a great animal petting park in the city.

    1. That’s awesome Luke! I bet your son will love the animal park. Getting out and making memories with our kids is the best thing we can do for them. Have fun with it!
